Week of September 13, 2011

Driving Question:  How do I develop a realistic plan for the future?

Summary:

This week we will focus upon the expectations and requirements for this course.

HSCECE 1.1.2Know and use a variety of prewriting strategies to generate, focus, and organize ideas (e.g., free writing, clustering/mapping, talking with others, brainstorming, outlining, developing graphic organizers, taking notes, summarizing, paraphrasing                                                                   
MI Grade 11, English/L.A. HSCECE 1.4.1Identify, explore, and refine topics and questions appropriate for research.

MI Grade 11, English/L.A. HSCECE 4.1.5Demonstrate use of conventions of grammar, usage, and mechanics in written texts, including parts of speech, sentence structure and variety, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.

MI Grade 11, English/L.A. HSCECE 4.1.2Use resources to determine word meanings, pronunciations, and word etymologies (e.g., context, print and electronic dictionaries, thesauruses, glossaries, and others)

MI Grade 11, English/L.A. HSCECE 2.1.3Determine the meaning of unfamiliar words, specialized vocabulary, figurative language, idiomatic expressions, and technical meanings of terms through context clues, word roots and affixes, and the use of appropriate resource materials such as print and electronic dictionaries.

ACT Standards

Identify the basic purpose or role of a specified phrase or sentence
Delete a clause or sentence because it is obviously irrelevant to the essay
Select the most logical place to add a sentence in a paragraph
Determine the need for punctuation and conjunctions to avoid awkward-sounding sentence fragments and fused sentences

Monday
1.       Today the Pre-Writing Process will be discussed. Emphasis will be placed upon the brainstorming process and creating and identifying a thesis statement.
2.       In Class activity- In class we will go through ten practice questions from study island.
3.       Students will also submit their blog assignments.

Tuesday
1.       Students will be lead through the Capitalization lecture and the proper use of interjections.
2.       We will discuss the usage of slang within written papers.
4.       In Class activity- In class we will go through ten practice questions from study island.



Wednesday
1.       Students will sit for the using a reference lecture, dictionary and thesaurus.
2.       In Class activity- In class we will go through ten practice questions from study island.
3.       Review of lessons from earlier within the week.
Take Home Study Guide.- Due Thursday in class.
Thursday
Students will submit their study guides for credit.

Students will take their first standards based assessment.

Friday
Students will participate within a restorative circle and discuss their thoughts and feelings about the test.

Blog Assignment 1: How do I develop a realistic plan for the future? 350 Words.
Advanced Topic
This week we will focus upon the history of Shakespeare, and begin watching the 21st version of “The Taming of the Shrew”

Advisory
This week in advisory we will discuss the upcoming ACT date, and the due dates for their college application. We will also complete the True Colors Assessment.

Differentiated Instructions
Students who have been preliminarily identified , will be assisted by myself and support services.
